CWS Door Installation: The Little Gables Owner’s Guide
If your CWS door isn’t closing square, dragging on the threshold, or letting daylight through the weatherstripping, the fix usually comes down to correct installation and adjustment, not a new door. In Little Gables, a full CWS door installation typically runs $450 to $950 for a standard hinged entry door when the existing frame is sound, and $1,200 to $2,800 when we’re replacing the frame, hardware, and threshold as a complete system. The cost depends on which CWS series you have, what failed first, and whether we’re working with an impact-rated opening. Most Little Gables jobs are done on the first visit because our trucks carry CWS-compatible hinges, sweeps, thresholds, and alignment hardware, so you’re not waiting on a special order.

How most owners discover the problem: the door worked fine until one morning it didn’t. You notice the latch misses the strike plate by a hair, or the bottom corner scrapes the tile after a heavy rain, or the door won’t stay open at 90 degrees. In Little Gables, where the water table is high and the soil shifts subtly with the seasons, door frames move more than people realize. That movement is what kills alignment and puts stress on hinges, sweeps, and frames. We see it on CWS doors throughout Coral Gables, the Roads, and Shenandoah, and it’s almost never the slab itself that fails first.
Which CWS Models This Applies To
CWS manufactures both standard and impact-rated door systems, and the installation hardware, hinge geometry, and threshold design are not universal across the lineup. The residential lines we work with most often in Little Gables are the CWS 800 Series, the 900 Series, and the impact-certified 3000 Series, each with its own frame depth and hinge prep. Before you order a part, look for the manufacturer’s label, usually etched into the top edge of the door slab or printed on a sticker inside the hinge mortise. That label gives you the series, the glass package, and the production date, and that’s what tells us the exact hinge spacing and sweep profile you need. A CWS 800 Series hinge is off by 3mm from the 900 Series, and that’s enough to throw off the reveal and cause the door to bind.
One gotcha we run into regularly in Little Gables: homeowners buy a “universal” weatherstrip kit from a box store, install it, and the door won’t close without slamming. CWS doors use a compression-style sweep that seats into a milled kerf in the bottom rail, not a surface-mounted sweep. If your door has that kerf, the aftermarket surface sweep will lift the leading edge and destroy the seal. For CWS specifically, we recommend OEM or OEM-spec parts for anything that touches weather resistance. For non-sealing parts like interior trim or handle sets, quality aftermarket equivalents in the right finish and backset work fine and save real money.
Signs Your CWS Door Installation Is Failing
- Door scrapes the floor only on one side. The hinge-side of the frame has settled or the hinge screws have loosened. In Little Gables, this is usually frame movement from wet/dry soil cycles, not a warped slab.
- Latch no longer engages the strike plate. The reveal has shifted. It starts as a shim problem and gets worse as the screws wallow out the wood. Sometimes the fix is a new strike plate; often it’s removing and resetting the slab.
- Draft or light visible along the top and latch side. Weatherstripping has compressed beyond its working range. On CWS doors, this is a channel-mounted bulb seal, and once it flattens it doesn’t recover. Replacement is a 20-minute job with the correct profile.
- Door swings open or shut on its own. The frame is out of plumb, usually because the rough opening wasn’t shimmed correctly at the original install or the structure has moved. This is a frame-level correction, not a hinge adjustment.
- Water stains at the bottom corners of the door. The threshold cap has separated from the threshold base, which lets water track under the sill. On a CWS impact door, this is a fixable part replacement, but it needs to be done before water reaches the subfloor.
If you’re seeing two or more of these at once, the installation was likely under-shimmed from the start or the rough opening has shifted. That’s a call worth making sooner rather than later, because water and misalignment don’t fix themselves and they do accelerate damage quickly in a humid climate.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For CWS door installation in Little Gables, most jobs land in one of these ranges:
- Full CWS door installation with new frame and thresholds: $1,200-$2,800, depending on impact rating and frame material
- Slab replacement using existing frame: $450-$950
- Weatherstripping and sweep replacement: $90-$240
- Hinge and hardware upgrade (full set, installed): $150-$400
- Frame plumb and re-shim: $300-$600
Every quote includes the part, the labor, the disposal of the old hardware or slab, and the time it takes to align the door so it operates like it did when the house was built. We write line-item quotes up front, so you see exactly where the money goes. CWS does not run a dealer network, so parts pricing varies; we have consistent access to genuine CWS hardware through our supplier relationships, and we pass the accurate cost on to you. If it’s not done right, our Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right, no arguments.

DIY or Call Us?
Some of this is safe to check yourself. You can tighten hinge screws, clean the threshold track, and visually confirm whether the weatherstripping is flat or springy. Those are good first steps and they cost nothing. What you should not do is pull the slab, try to re-shim the frame, or force the door back into alignment by bending the hinges or planing the edge. A CWS impact door is a heavy, engineered system, and if it slips while removing the pins, you’re dealing with hundreds of pounds of door that can cause serious injury. The frame work underneath is where the real difficulty lives, and it’s also where an untrained install can ruin the opening geometry and turn a $300 fix into a $2,000 replacement.

FAQs
A correctly installed CWS door should function well for 20 to 30 years, but you should expect the weatherstripping and sweeps to need replacement every five to seven years due to Florida’s sun, humidity, and salt air. The frame itself can last decades if the rough opening was shimmed properly the first time.
In most cases, yes. Frame re-shimming, hinge replacement, weatherstripping, and threshold work solve the majority of problems without touching the slab. We only recommend replacing the slab when the core is compromised by water or the impact lamination has separated.
A hardware-level repair like weatherstripping or hinges takes under an hour. A full frame-and-slab replacement takes half a day on most Little Gables homes, including shimming, sealing, and clean-up.
We carry CWS-compatible hinges, strikes, sweeps, bulb seals, and threshold caps on our trucks, along with matching hardware for PGT, CGI, and ES Windows. If your build requires a specialty finish or an impact-glazed slab, we order it and schedule the install the week it arrives.
If your CWS door is dragging, leaking, or just not latching like it used to, call (727) 291-4678 for a free estimate. We’ll tell you what’s wrong, what it costs, and what we’d do if it were our own house.
